Prince's research seeks to examine trade union responses to neoliberalism in Ghana through three case studies: union resistance against upward utility tariff adjustments, unionization of professional, managerial, and senior staff and the involvement of the Maritime and Dockworkers Union (MDU) in the Ghana Dock Labour Company (GDLC). These cases typify the two possible sites of trade union struggles (workplace and outside the workplace) as they confront the impacts of neoliberalism in the country. Workplace reactions such as the unionization of white-collar workers and participation of MDU in GDCL, express the institutional development objectives of trade unions and aim at building union power through increased and diversified membership. Outside the workplace, union opposition to electricity and water tariff hikes represents the external outlook or movement orientation of unions in response to the impacts of neoliberal socioeconomic policies in the country.
